Daan Ekadashi

    Date: Saturday 14 September 2024

Also known as: Vamana, Parivartini or Parsva Ekadashi

In Pushtimarg, there is much importance of Daan Ekadashi. On this day the wonderful Daan Lila was happening between the group of Gopijan and Shri Krishna. In the ancient times, daan (now known as excise duty or tax), was taken on the saleable items by the king from all his subjects in his kingdom. In Vraj, Shri Nandrayji was the king. Hence, Shri Thakorji was able to collect the daan from all the people who lived there.

At that time, the people of the Vraj mostly had dairy products like curd, butter and ghee to sell (mainly in large local towns like Mathura) and make a living. From this they also paid their daan. To remove such a tradition of giving daan, Shri Thakorji (with His friends and monkeys) broke the clay pots of curd of the women of Vraj thereby robbing them of their curd. This then stopped the exporting of such products to Mathura from Vraj.

The only intention of Shri Thakorji behind this was to develop faith in the people of Vraj towards Himself. The Shri Thakorji tells us in the Daan Lila that, “Donate to me you every senses. Do the darshan of Mine every time with your eyes, chant My name with your tongue, listen to the Bhagwad Katha and about My Lilas with your ears. I am asking for donations of your heart and soul only.”

Shri Gusaiji has written the book named “Daan Lila” and the main character in this book is Shri Chandravaliji. She is famous as the second Swaminiji. The milk is the Adharamrut of Swaminiji and the curd is the adharamrut of Shri Chandravaliji. Hence, we should offer the curd in the Rajbhog to Shri Thakorji.
