Sakhi number 4 (four)

In this fourth Sakhi, Shri Hariraiji explains that much of the world becomes absorbed in worshipping various devas and devis in the hope of solving worldly problems. People may pray for health, wealth, a home, marriage, success or relief from difficulties. They may feel that, once these problems are resolved, they will find lasting happiness.

However, Shri Hariraiji reminds us that worldly difficulties are not the only reality. This life is temporary, and material comforts alone cannot bring lasting fulfilment to the soul. A person may gain many things in this world, yet still remain caught in fear, desire and attachment.

Shri Hariraiji therefore teaches that Shri Vallabh is the true refuge for the soul. He says:
“Without the boat of Shri Vallabh’s Name, who can cross to the other shore?”

The “other shore” refers to freedom from worldly illusion and the attainment of a loving relationship with Shri Thakorji. Shri Vallabh has come to guide souls towards this divine destination. His path offers far more than temporary relief from worldly concerns; it gives us a lasting connection with Shri Thakorji.

Some may ask, “If we do not ask Shri Vallabh for our needs, then who will we turn to when we face difficulties?”

The teaching here is that Shri Vallabh already knows the needs of His devotees. We do not need to repeatedly explain every concern to Him as though He is unaware. He knows what is best for us, when it is best for us, and what will truly benefit our spiritual journey.

We may see only an immediate need, like someone who wishes to build a small hut quickly. But Shri Vallabh sees much further. He may be preparing something far greater for us: lasting shelter, peace and spiritual wellbeing. We should therefore not lose faith simply because our wishes are not fulfilled immediately or in the way we expect.

This does not mean that a Vaishnav should disrespect devas, devis, elders, guests or any living being. Respect is an important part of Vaishnav life. We should show courtesy and reverence to all, because every being belongs to Shri Thakorji.

However, there is a difference between respect and taking refuge.

We may respect all deities and all forms of life, but a Vaishnav’s ultimate faith, dependence and surrender remain with Shri Vallabh. To take refuge in Shri Vallabh means to trust that no one can truly bless us or harm us independently of His will.

When we begin to believe that someone else has complete control over our happiness, success or misfortune, we can become caught in fear and confusion. The desire to seek blessings from every direction, or the fear that something bad may happen if we stop following a particular practice, can distract us from our true refuge.

Shri Hariraiji teaches us not to follow a practice merely out of fear. Fear is not the foundation of Pushtimarg. Love, trust, grace and surrender are its foundation.

There may be occasions when we take part in a family custom out of respect, harmony or love for others. This should not be confused with taking spiritual refuge elsewhere. A Vaishnav may honour family traditions while keeping Shri Vallabh as the sole centre of faith and devotion.

The message of this Sakhi is clear: do not allow worldly fears, desires or attachments to make you forget Shri Vallabh. Remain under His shelter, trust His grace and continue on the path He has shown.
