Situated around 15 kilometres northwest of Ajmer, Pushkar is has over 500 temples of which 80 are large and the rest small. The most important one is the Brahma temple. It is believed that Shri Brahmaji himself chose the location for His temple.
In the centre of the town, there is a famous Pushkar Lake (also known as Brahma Sarowar). In the southwest corner of this lake, is Vallabh Ghat where Shri Mahaprabhuji’s Baithakji is situated.
Shri Mahaprabhuji during his pilgrimage stayed under the Chhokar tree. During a conversation with Shri Krushnadas Meghan, He said “The Ganga river is the mother of all holy places whilst Pushkar is the father”.
As soon as Shri Brahmaji learnt that Shri Mahaprabhuji was in Pushkar, He disguised Himself as a Brahmin and came in front of Shri Mahaprabhuji. After bowing down and giving Shri Mahaprabhuji respect, Shri Brahmaji requested ““Maharaj, you are doing pilgrimage to salvage all the shrines and places of pilgrim over this land. Please do the salvage Pushkar too.” Shree Mahaprabhuji has replied, “You are the father of all the shrines, then why are You requesting like this?” The Pushkarji answered “Maharaj, in this Kaliyug, all the shrines have destroyed. Their divine form has destroyed. So, you are the only capable who can salvage these shrines.”
Shri Mahaprabhuji, pleased with this reply, agreed to read the Shrimad Bhagwat Parayan here. Many people in the town took advantage of this spiritual experience.
From here, Shri Mahaprabhuji headed towards Krukshetra.
An important historical note
A painter called Honhar was one of Akbar’s (1556 – 1605 AD) leading Court artist. He painted one of the first portraits of Shri Mahaprabhuji. This painting is kept securely in the city of Kishangadh, around 40 kilometres west of Pushkar.
